Have you ever noticed some males get enlarged breasts? It looks odd; the affected individual also feels irritated, especially when he is in his teens or adolescence. You may have noticed this problem in aged males as well. This problem is not serious yet not ignorable. Some do ignore but it may get worse with age. This is a medical condition known as gynecomastia. Several glands are present underneath the skin of the breasts in males. When these glands expand the breast looks big and odd. Two major hormones in the human body are testosterone and estrogen. As such, testosterone determines male characteristics while estrogen determines female characteristics. Estrogen is formed in the male body in minute quantities while testosterone is formed in the female body in minute quantities. When testosterone is formed in lower quantities compared to estrogen in the male body, the effects of estrogen become more prominent. An increase in the breast size in the male body is due to the reduced effects of testosterone and increased effects of estrogen.

How can gynecomastia affect males at different ages?

Gynecomastia is a medical condition. It can happen at any age. Let’s have a look:

  1. Gynecomastia in infants – As per the data available, more than 50% of male infants are born with enlarged breasts. This happens due to the enhanced effects of mothers’ estrogen levels in the fetuses. This condition reverses
    within some months after birth.
  2. Gynecomastia in puberty – During puberty, hormonal changes occur both in males and females. This is the period when male and female hormones, i.e. testosterone and estrogen start working in the male and female bodies
    respectively. Having enlarged breasts during puberty is possible in some male bodies due to increased production of estrogen but that normally dissipates with time. if that doesn’t occur, treatment is essential.
  3. Gynecomastia in adults – The condition is most visible in adults especially during aging. Males in their early 60s face this problem in higher numbers than any other age group.

What about gynecomastia treatment?

Some forms of gynecomastia go away with time without any treatment. However, if it happens due to some other reasons like the use of certain medicines, some diseases that reduce the secretion of testosterone, or malnutrition, in that case, proper treatment or in certain conditions gynecomastia surgery is required.

In the early stages of gynecomastia, medication can effectively. However, if the problem doesn’t reverse automatically or medication is not started at the early stages, surgery is the only option.
